This receipe tasted groovy but I made some changes to information technology - which I highly was very pleased with. a) I used Golden Mushroom soup instead of regular - it but fabricated the sauce look so rich b) I used Beloved Brown Lager beer - information technology gave a nice sweet twist of a taste to it and only used One-half the bottle. c) I quartered reddish potatos and baked in the oven at 425' for thirty minutes (45 minutes before pot roast was finished) in a metal pan, not glass - with salt, pepper, olive oil, paprika and oregano (topped with foil) and and then dumped it into the pot roast for the last 15 minutes. The sauce of the pot roast was something yous could put over any meat or chicken and made the carrots and celery melt in your rima oris.

I loved this recipe. I used a dutch oven and baked it instead at 300F for near 3 hours and when information technology was done the meat just fell apart and was so tender.
eleven/12/2000
Fantabulous flavor. I besides made it in the crock pot afterwards searing the meat and cooking the veggies in oil. The gravy was wonderful on mashed potatoes!
06/13/2001
Very skilful results! I love using beer in pot roast as you go such a tender meat and nice season. The mushroom soup adds a overnice creamy gustation to the goop!
03/13/2006
And so easy. So tasty. I used my crockpot. Seared the meat first and sauteed the vegetables. Used Cream of Mushroom with Roasted Garlic soup. I used a tri-tip roast and it was then moist and tender that my 17 year sometime who is NOT a red meat fan, loved it. Adjacent time will cook some wide egg noodles and serve it like a stroganoff.
11/06/2000
Yum! This was actually good and really piece of cake. Don't be intimated by the cooktime. All you need to do is toss stuff in a dutch oven and allow everything simmer for a while.
08/12/2008
I love cooking with either beer or wine which is why this recipe caught my eye. I did omit the cloves as I'chiliad non a huge fan. I also added some beef broth, more seasonings and a bit of Gravy Chief. Once the meat was done, I thickened with flour and some of the fat that had accumulated. This too works really nicely in the wearisome cooker once you've browned the meat. Just brand certain you deglaze the pan with the liquid before transferring it to the crock pot. Very good Christy and thank yous!

A couple weeks ago I made a roast from a recipe on this site and proclaimed information technology to be the best roast I'd ever had. Well, this is taking it's spot. The meat was beyond tender and so juicy. I did put all the ingredients, plus a bag of babe carrots, into the slow cooker instead. Cooked it on high for six hours, depression for one. Thickened the gravy with instant murphy flakes. Then, so, SO good!
08/29/2007
This was really skilful, and different from the standard cream of mushroom, onion packet and beef goop pot roasts out in that location; but I did experience information technology was missing something. Wasn't able to put my finger on it exactly. I did apply my crock pot and threw in the bay leaf sans the cloves (non a huge fan of cloves) along with peradventure a tablespoon of beef boullion granuels. Permit it cook all day and threw some baby carrots and potatoes in near half mode. Everything was tender and delicious and once the drippings were thickened, they made a wonderful gravy. I would like to try this i again, but I volition experiment with the spices. Thanks!!
08/19/2010
I'm not a fan of pot roast myself, but I made this in the crock pot for my beau. I e'er inquire him how many stars he thinks I should put on A.R., lol! He says this one is definitely deserving of 5! I didn't have whatsoever celery, so I skipped it. I browned the roast in bacon drippings as per 1 suggestion I read. Then I tossed it in the deadening cooker, covered it with the onions and garlic, and dumped in my beer (Yuengling Lager) and mushroom soup. I did this just as I was leaving for piece of work, and six hours subsequently he enjoyed an crawly bootleg repast while I was abroad. Thank you ChristyJ!
11/11/2007
I followed this recipe to the letter of the alphabet except used 2 cans of cream of mushroom (iii.5 lbs. of meat) and I marinated the meat for 2 hours start (olive oil, granulated garlic and Kroger steak seasoning - similar to Dales). This turned out excellent and it is a terrific way to use less expensive cuts of meat (particularly round steak).
01/eighteen/2011
Been using beer in my pot roasts for years, just never in combo with soup. Followed bones recipe closely. Used a chuck roast trimmed of fat seasoned with a petty table salt and freshly basis pepper. Used a flavorful pale ale and added a couple sliced carrots along with celery and onion. Cooked in cast iron dutch oven just over three hr in a 300° oven. Added portabello mushrooms forth with sliced meat for concluding xxx minutes. Came out very tender and flavorful. Served with noodles and crusty bootleg Australian "Damper Bread" it made a hearty dinner on a winter dark.
12/22/2010
Very very skilful. I was in a hurry and so I skipped the onion, celery, by leaves and cloves. I just put it in the crock pot with the other bones stuff and information technology was crawly! I added flour to the sauce after information technology cooked and information technology made wonderful gravy! I'll make this again for sure
12/21/2010
My family loved this. I did add some thyme to the sauce but other than that it turned out actually great.
09/13/2010
I loved making this dish. It'southward made with ingredients I commonly have on hand. I thought my gravy was too sparse when I took the roast out of the pan to cut so I added some corn starch. And so being lazy, I added carrots and potatoes for a 1-dish Meal. I made it all on the stovetop. And so easy.
03/03/2010
I used a london bake and followed the recipe to the letter. Came out swell! I cooked mine in the crock pot on loftier for nigh 6 hours, and then depression for most 2 more. The london broil literally fell apart when I was taking it out. Hubby loved it!
12/30/2009
Great recipe. I just tweaked it slightly. I added another tin can of foam of mushroom for more gravy, used garlic powder (its what I had), ane bay leaf and no cloves (didn't take whatever). I also used less veggie oil and used bacon instead. Later on searing the roast with the bacon, I cut up the bacon and left it in the final product. Made for peachy gustation. Also added pepper and common salt to the final gravy. I also made this in an oven. If you do, apply a roasting pan you lot can embrace (I bought a disposable i) and then put it in for 2 hours at 350 then some other twenty mins afterward y'all piece upwardly the meat. I also thickened the gravy a niggling with some flour and cornstarch.
08/05/2009
Very piece of cake to brand and superb sauce flavour. Our company loved it! Adjacent time I'll use the slow cooker and add together more veggies to soak upwardly the neat flavor!
01/04/2011
Outstanding. I didn't add together the cloves or bay leaf. I used polish beer and a jar of turkey gravy/three cans of sliced mushrooms because I didn't have mushroom soup. I also used salt pepper and garlic/pepper on the roast before i cooked it. I was worried about cooking a roast in the roasting pan on height of the stove because my pan is large and oval. I was afraid information technology would ruin the pan or heat unevenly but it was perfect. I let my three pound angus chuck roast simmer for 4 hours while I worked around the house. It smelled heavenly and was perfect when I served it. I threw baking potatoes and whole carrots in next to the roast. Very easy and tasty.
01/19/2011
My husband admittedly loves this roast and for me it's okay. I like using lipton onion and gold mushroom flavour better and it's also much easier. I used a chuck roast and I as well used golden mushroom instead.
10/31/2010
I cooked a 3 pound roast on the stove, as directed. And information technology took 4 1/2 hrs.
02/12/2010
This was not bad. I used extra garlic and omitted the cloves, though if (when) I do this once again, I'll apply them. We used a bottom round, and it was really tender and made super sandwiches through the week.
eleven/24/2009
The picture looks a little gross
12/30/2010
Left out the cloves..didn't appeal to me. Slow cooked in roaster. First-class texture, flavor, and aroma.
12/07/2009
I used tenderized round steak for this. Information technology was skillful only not sensational. My family liked it but never said anything nearly making it over again. PRob. won't practise this again.
10/02/2009
i thought it was as well 'clovey' tasting. I wouldn't melt it again.
03/03/2009
I followed this recipe pretty much to a "t", except I did not accept any cheesecloth, so I put the bay leaves right in the sauce and used footing cloves. Information technology was succulent! My hubby said information technology was definitely one I could make for him again.
09/08/2010
We really enjoyed this. Be sure to add common salt and pepper when y'all brown the meat, though.
09/27/2009
I used a boneless beef blade roast. Rubbed it with salt, pepper, Louisiana hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. I omitted the celery and whole cloves. Added celery seed to the onions and garlic to make upward for the lack of celery flavor. Since I didn't take the cloves I but added the bay leaves to the sauce. Used reduced-sodium cream of mushroom soup. Only simmered the roast in the sauce for one hr to avoid making the meat too tough. Thickened the sauce with a half loving cup of red vino and two teaspoons of cornstarch. Good gustatory modality, merely I call up if I had used cloves the sauce would have had more depth. With the addition of ruby-red wine, I simmered the sauce for about 10 minutes before adding back the sliced roast. Served this with a cabbage dish and some large-cut french chips. If I make this once more it would most likely be in the slow cooker to achieve a more tender meat.
05/17/2000
I substituted venison for the beefiness, omitted the bay leafage and cloves and increased the garlic and vegetables. It was then tender and flavorful! And the usual "gamey" sense of taste was eliminated! Absolutely fantastic!
02/17/2000
This recipe was OUTSTANDING!!!!!! I highly recommend it to everyone!!!! When I first put the beer and soup into my pot, it didn't look so great. I thought "Oh my, I simply wasted a good piece of meat!" BUT when it was washed cooking... It became a family favorite!!! I passed it on to all my friends! And so neat!!!
03/19/2002
We enjoyed this. I found the gravy a footling watery merely however practiced. I added some sliced carrots and whole tiny potatoes, and cooked the roast for an extra thirty mins.
10/nineteen/2000
I didn't find this to be every bit dandy equally some people did. Maybe information technology was the make of beer I used? Anyways, I'll keep trying : )
01/08/2010
smelled absolutely divine while cooking. Made first-class gravy and I tossed it all in my slow cooker! Thanks for posting such an easy only tasty meal for when you lot're in a compression.
10/24/2005
I fabricated this, and my young man loved it. I'k not sure if I was as impressed - either the cutting of meat I used wasn't the best (possible) or the sauce was a piddling besides "Bay leaf-y." In any charge per unit, I'll try this one more time, merely to run across how it cooks with a dissimilar blazon of meat, but I may brand some adjustments (not every bit much bay leaf, taking it out all together, etc)
08/05/2000
Amazingly yummy. My hubby forgave me for using his Bass for this dish. And information technology was even better as leftovers!!!
01/19/2010
Good just naught spectacular. I left out the celery and cloves and used a single bay leafage. I seared the meat earlier putting it in the crock pot for the afternoon and the meat was very tender. I served it with mashed potatoes and used the sauce every bit gravy. It made very practiced gravy.
07/16/2006
Easy! Tasty! Inexpensive! I don't know why this one got any negative reviews. I followed the recipe nigh to the alphabetic character (I didn't accept any bay leaf, and I used ground cloves instead of whole) and information technology turned out perfectly. At first I noticed a slight bitter aftertaste like a few people mentioned, but I attribute this to the cloves and/or beer. If the beer is responsible for the bitterness, could be the type of beer used. I used a lager (Moosehead). Also, the recipe didn't call for common salt, but I added maybe half a teaspoon. This is a definite "brand over again"! Would go squeamish with rice.
03/18/2007
So like shooting fish in a barrel and the sauce was yummy. Prissy change to plain old pot roast
01/18/2002
I used a 2 1/2 pound rump roast. I used a light beer and added two beefiness burgoo cubes for a darker color. Very tender and nifty gravy.
01/24/2011
Very skilful repast for a crowd. Substituted 1 tin can cream of onion & 1 can cream of celery, every bit I doubled the recipe.
02/07/2006
I establish this an like shooting fish in a barrel and tasty roast recipe. I made in the crockpot and my roast was flavorful and tender. I would recommend adding mushrooms and potatoes to the roast, merely really fabricated no other changes. I used a light beer and Healthy Request Cream of Mushroom soup. Other than needing a niggling salt I did non observe the gravy lacking at all. I served with mashed potatoes, biscuits and salad for an easy weeknight meal.
10/21/2010
Oh wow!!! I used Fat Tire beer and let this ane slow cook all 24-hour interval, about ten hours total, the meat fell apart it was so tender, and the flavour!! Clove was a very squeamish addition.
08/31/2011
We really loved this recipe but information technology was a lilliputian tough when cooked in the pan the way the recipe suggests. Side by side time we are going to exercise it in the crock pot.
03/03/2008
I added extra seasonings so the beer flavor wouldn't exist to overwhelming.
03/xxx/2002
I wasn't thrilled with this recipe at all. I make a fabled pot roast and thought this would exist a really squeamish modify... beer and red meat, what could get wrong?! It came out ok and tasted improve the second night but I don't think I'll exist making this one over again.
01/02/2008
Outstanding, I used this recipe on a roast I cooked for a big family diner and it was a big hit. I am not a great cook so you fabricated me await good. Everyone was very surprised. Cheers Mary G
09/09/2003
This was splendid! And then simple and so tasty. I sprinkled a liberal corporeality of garlic powder on the meat before browning and substituted the celery (didn't have whatsoever on mitt) with half a green pepper. The sauce was wonderful and there was lots of it - this goes great with egg noodles.
03/31/2000
This was absolutely fabled and scrumptious when enjoyed with your favorite red wine.
05/04/2008
I did not follow this recipe exactly but the dish was very tasty. Here's what I did: Did sear the roast in oil Did non include chopped onion, celery or garlic Cooked in a tedious cooker Added potatoes, a little nutmeg, clove pulverization, onion powder, lots of season salt, bay leaves. The master reward of my changes is that it saved preparation time. I would non have idea to mix beer and mushroom soup. My hubby loved this and asked for THIRDS, my 3 year old ate it and she is very picky near eating meat. I am not known for my cooking, my husband is the melt in our business firm, and then this was a big win.
03/01/2006
This was a great repast. I was suprised by the flavor with the beer and clove. It had a taste reminiscent of beef stroganoff. Thank you
03/27/2000
When I made it the first time, I accidenly bought the pork instead of beefiness. It came out wonderful. I then tried to make the beef and my boyfrind and I loveed the pork more.
03/15/2001
I don't know why, but I didn't get the outstanding flavor that most everyone else raved about. I was really disappointed. I followed the recipe to a "T" but actually the meat was rather bland. Perchance the selection of beer actually makes a departure? I used Sam Adams. Perchance I will endeavour again with Bass, which other reviewers seem to have gotten adept results with.
03/xvi/2011
I thought that this roast sounded delicious and that it was supported by the reviews, but I have got to say that information technology was not that wonderful. The juices were pretty bland - I had to add my own seasonings to make this taste decent. I recollect the only good office of this recipe were the vegetables.
10/27/2011
Probably more similar iii.v stars. It's swell, only despite the fact that I added more garlic, plenty of salt and pepper, and oven roasted potatoes with paprika and oregano it was withal very bland. Kick information technology upwards a notch with your favorite spices and this will be a 4-5 star recipe.
12/09/2007
Fabricated this on Thanksgiving along with a turkey and this was a bigger hit than the turkey!! This is definetly my favorite roast recipe!! I cooked in a crock pot with veggies (added the veggies halfway through cooking time) and it was super!
02/29/2000
I had to make some revisions for this one~no Cream of Mushroom or celery. Used Cream of Celery & added beef base. The results were fantastic!!! Served with wide noodles & carrots. Only a piffling leftover, & that to me was fifty-fifty better the next day!!! Maybe side by side time I'll apply a dark ale?!
05/06/2011
Delicious recipe! I made mine in the crock pot after searing the meat and sauteeing the vegetables. The meat was so tender and falling apart. Adjacent time I might add together something to thicken the gravy, because it was pretty thin, just nonetheless very tasty!
09/02/2006
what a simple, delicious recipe. i added a handbag of frozen roasted potatoes about an 60 minutes before serving. my boyfriend dislocated my request to piece up the roast and diced information technology into bite sized pieces... but it turned out to exist a great beefiness stew. my mother was visiting and requested the recipe. cheers! this i's a keeper!
01/27/2001
The only ingredient I omitted was the celery stalks, because my husband doesn't like them. Inspite of this, though, Christine's recipe still turned out to exist fabulously yummy! I don't know if it matters what make of beer is used, but FYI, I used Bass Ale. I highly recommend this recipe not only because the results plough out to be fantastic, but also because for a novice cook similar me, it was quite easy to make! :)
01/18/2009
Wow this was really good. I broiled my 3 pounder in the oven for 4.5 hours at 325. I had to thicken the sauce with a lilliputian cornstarch to make a gravy. Best gravy ever!
02/15/2007
My entire family unit liked this 1! The gravy is loaded with season and the meat came out tender and juicy. I complimented this with smothered green beans and rice. Volition make again!
eleven/08/2008
Very good when y'all desire beefy, flossy comfort food. I followed the initial steps then put it all in the crockpot for about 8 hours. I was a bit worried at first because the dark beer I added (Smithwick'southward) did give the sauce a slightly bitter sense of taste, just later cooking all solar day it all mellowed nicely.
06/28/2000
I made this is the slow cooker. The season is great, and you lot don't heat upwards the kitchen. I sear the beefiness start, then follow the directions, put on low heat. A few vegies, of grade covered with that great gravy, and enjoy.
eleven/09/2000
Sooo expert....so tender .. the meat just falls apart. Absolutely succulent!!!
01/23/2009
This was okay, only I honestly couldn't go over the scent of boiled meat that accompanied it. I don't call back I'll be making this one once more.
12/26/2013
This needed something more. My advise would be to use a darker sweeter beer. Perhaps mine would've turned out amend if I had. I followed it exactly (a scrap more garlic as I Beloved garlic) but otherwise it just wasn't the all-time tasting. My married man agreed..
05/06/2006
It would take been better if information technology didnt have a hint of beer gustatory modality. LOL so I guess don't effort this if y'all don't like beer!
01/22/2006
My family loved it, I didn't use the bay leaves or cloves and added a couple of potatoes cut upward. Yummy!!
02/24/2008
This was yummy over mashed potatoes. I used Guiness, just I'd love to try a dissimilar flavor with it likewise. I took off the lid and simmered about 15 minutes extra to thicken up the gravy. Definitely will make again!
03/27/2008
This was really easy and succulent. I didn't have whatsoever celery, but I did have a fennel bulb. Figured they're both in the aforementioned family, I think, and then I cutting it up and used it instead. It was actually good. The gravy was succulent. Everyone loved information technology. Volition definitely make once more. Thanks for sharing!
02/27/2000
Bully flavor! A New Favorite in My Business firm!
12/12/2001
I used a chuck roast and cooked it using a pressure cooker. It cut the cooking fourth dimension to about an hour. I cooked the roast for thirty minutes, then added potatoes and carrots, and cooked an additional 20 minutes. It turned out bang-up, lots of tasty gravy.
12/03/2006
This was wonderful. Cooked it in a large pan, on the stove elevation. It cooked for two.5 hours and the meat was and then tender. We used Bass Ale, added freshmushrooms while it was cooking. Served it with a salad.. it was delicious.
10/07/2008
Terrific! I doubled the recipe and anybody truly enjoyed information technology. We will definitely make it again!
11/13/2019
I cooked merely over 1lb in the dutch oven on the stove. I used golden cream of mushroom and ground clove for the recipe. Nosotros thought it was great! Lots of gravy and the meat was perfect texture. I will be using leftover with egg noodles.
08/20/2008
But modification I did was using a dash of ground cloves (my husband isn't a large fan) and adding mushroom from a can. I used Guinness and the roast tasted way besides strong. I'll have to try this again with a lighter beer.
01/02/2009
Good, but cipher special. In this braised beefiness dish, I used a sirloin tip roast. Because it was then lean, the meat was a little dry out and chewy. A chuck or other more heavily marbled cut would probably have been better (with degreasing at the end). Still, this was just OK. For much better beefiness/beer braises, check out the carbonades on foodnetwork.com and in Julia Child'due south "Mastering" book, vol. one. Both employ more onion, a little brown sugar, and a very interesting only subtle vinegar terminate.
03/10/2008
First, I never melt meat so I was a bit fearful nigh ruining a $15 roast. (My mom is living with me while undergoing cancer treatment and I'g pulling out all the stops to get her to consume. She gave it 5 stars!) I followed the recipe with the post-obit changes: I added and an extra clove of garlic and stalk of celery. I also added a handful of rehydrated porcini mushrooms and soaking liquid, some Worchestershire sauce, and a few shakes of Maggi seasoning which I think is MSG. After simmering for 40 minutes, I realed the stovetop method was also wearisome, so I cutting the meat in one-half and put part of information technology in the pressure cooker and left the other section in the pan. The pan gravy was succulent. I used Magic Chapeau #9 as the beer and pocket-sized bay leaves and there was no biting palatableness or anthing. The gravy in the pressure level cooker was thinner, just the meat was very, very tender. I ended up comingling the lefovers from both pots and dicing the meat and fabricated a fleck of stew that I volition add pearl onions, mmushrooms and some sour cream to and serve over egg noodles later in the week. I think this is a skillful recipe for beginners and will use it as a base of operations to play with.
12/24/2000
I feel that this recipe should have tasted better for the amount of time it had to cook.
03/sixteen/2014
I made this dish last Dominicus and the house smelled amazing while it was cooking in the crockpot. It had great flavor and was very tender. Will be making this again.
03/06/2007
Very good and easy and my husband is or can exist a picky eater but he did like this and y'all don't taste the beer at all.
01/09/2002
A very easy recipe, and the kids dearest it too!
12/08/2000
I ended up cooking this a lot longer than the recipe called for, but the result was a roast that literally barbarous apart on the fork. I also roasted some new potatoes and used the mushroom gravy as a side. The reviews at the tabular array were rave.
10/15/2000
This was a corking ane! Super easy and Super yummy. It makes information technology's ain gravy and makes the house smell great while information technology is roasting. My husband thought I had slaved away all solar day with this one. (I let hime retrieve that so he would do the dishes). I will be making this one once again for sure.
03/thirteen/2001
Very good pot roast recipe! I've tried some other one on this site (the highly rated one)and liked this ameliorate. Perchance because of the cut of meat. Came out much more tender than the other one. Followed the directions to the "T". Husband, brother and picky three year erstwhile daughter raved! Loved the beer in information technology! I call up I'll put ane less bay leaf adjacent time. That (sense of taste) came through pretty potent.
02/07/2009
Good but needed more flavour.
01/05/2008
This turned out tasty and moist, but the meat was over done. I used a three.v pound roast (larger than what the recipe calls for) and cooked it for 2 hours. Side by side fourth dimension I'll reduce the cooking time by a one-half hour, but still utilize a larger than called for roast.
02/24/2019
I didn't employ the celery or cloves merely added sliced baby bella mushrooms at the end. I also used an amber German beer and the flavor of the gravy was incredible! My new pot roast recipe.
02/12/2001
I wasn't going to attempt this recipe, even though it has rave reviews, considering the idea of beer in pot roast didn't seem right. Boy, was I wrong. rummaging the cupboards, I found a bottle of Irish gaelic Stout beer, and decided to apply it for this pot roast. I added some veggies and cooked it in a irksome cooker, but otherwise stuck to Christines' recipe. Props to ya, Christine. Succulent. I was puzzled virtually the clove matter.... until I tasted it. Who'da thought??????
03/xiv/2000
I don't know who comes upwardly with such combinations, but I'm glad someone'south creative! I would have never guessed beer and foam of mushroom soup could produce such a great cease event!
11/08/2012
this recipe is awesome make sure you utilize a nighttime beer makes for richer season......
05/26/2006
I made this awhile agone. Not a keeper.
06/28/2005
This was a disaster for me...the meat gained inappreciably any flavor and was very bland. The sauce nevertheless wound up being overpowered past the cloves and bay leaves and had a biting aftertaste. Bad Deal.
02/26/2003
Meat was moist and had good season, but it was not out of the ordinary in flavor...sorry simply it tasted similar a typical roast found at any "proficient" eatery! It was easy to set up and anybody ate information technology all, I will make it again for it's simplicity but it is non one of my favorites.
02/25/2000
I fabricated this pot roast for my family unit and it was a big hit. My son-in-law said the best he ever had.
08/xv/2000
When I first pulled this off the site I thought I had everything I needed for it,it turned out I had the beer, cream of mushroom soup, the roast and the onions. I did some adjustments by coating roast in flour earlier browning and fabricated gravy of the drippings but so far of the 2 times that I made it got "a sure fire keeper". Thanks. KDM, Gig Harbor, Wa
12/22/2007
This pot roast recipe is great! The roast which would take been on the tougher side came out moist, tender and flavorful. I highly recommend it for a great dinner!
01/23/2017
It was pretty good. Recipe calls for circular steak, which I used, but I would think a round or chuck roast would be better for this, allowing information technology to cook longer. Otherwise I fabricated it per the recipe and it turned out well. Perfect for a Sunday all in one pot meal.
